The Indy’s Coverage of Zohran Mamdani from 2020–2025

Long before he became the breakout star in this year’s NYC mayoral race, Mamdani appeared regularly in the pages of The Indy and on our Tuesday evening news and public affairs show on WBAI-99.5 FM.

At The Indypendent, we’re always listening closely to what’s happening with grassroots movements and electoral campaigns that boldly challenge the economic and political status quo in New York City. We began covering Zohran Mamdani in the spring of 2020 when he was running for a New York State Assembly seat against a five-term incumbent in Astoria, Queens. We’ve been following him ever since as a crusading assembly member and as a mayoral candidate who was initially thought to have little chance of victory but has (no surprise to us) surged into a strong second place. With a week until election day, Mamdani has a decent chance of defeating Andrew Cuomo.
