Join Our Team!

The Indypendent is both an indispensable source of radical news and analysis for New Yorkers and a unique place to gain journalism experience. We currently have a variety of volunteer staff positions open on our newspaper edition and our website. If you are interested in joining our team or simply pitching a story, please reach out to the editors at or call 917-426-4856 for more information.

Winter-spring Intern

The Indypendent is currently accepting applications for our fall internship program. The application deadline is Feb. 1 (extended), and the internship program begins soon thereafter. Undergraduate and graduate students or community members with previous reporting experience or one year of completed journalism coursework are encouraged to apply. We are seeking interns who are hard-working, organized, enjoy working both independently and as a part of a team, and are dedicated to high-quality journalism in pursuit of social justice.

Interns will work 10-15 hours every week for the length of the program. We will mentor interns to improve their journalism skills, including training in story development, interviewing, information gathering and editing. Interns will also help with the editorial and administrative tasks vital to the daily functioning of The Indypendent’s newspaper and website. These range from newspaper distribution to fact-checking to research projects.

Applicants should submit a cover letter, resume and two published news clips to us at no later than May 1. We will prioritize Spanish speakers. Please note that the internship is unpaid. For more about the experiences of past interns, click here.

Social Media

Have photos or video from an event or protest you’ve attended? Email them to our social media editor.

Newspaper Designer

We are looking for an additional designer to join our amazing, award-winning layout team.

Production takes place once a month over several nights. You will be working with editors, artists and other designers. Knowledge of In-Design and familiarity with design theory are essential.

News Reporter

From its inception, The Indypendent has been a place where aspiring journalists have developed their skills (1|2|3|4) by hitting the streets to tell the stories that matter to the lives of the 99%. If you love reporting and writing, The Indy is a great place to learn the craft and get good clips. Some prior reporting experience preferred.

Are you a professional photographer with an interest in social justice issues who would like to occasionally work outside the parameters of your regular assignments? Or, are you a talented, up-and-coming photographer who believes a better world is possible and also wants to get some good clips and show the kind of work you can do? If so, The Indy might be the place for you. We offer the chance to do both spot photography to accompany individual articles as well as photo essays that bring to life issues and struggles rarely acknowledged in the corporate media.

Movie Reviewer

If you love movies, are well-versed in film history and aesthetics, have left-leaning politics and like to write, The Indy could be the perfect home for you.

Book Reviewer

If you love great writing, are familiar with left history and social movements and believe that big ideas can be written about in clear, compelling prose, let’s talk.

Music eviewer

What are the latest albums Indy readers should know about? Who are the amazing bands in NYC that almost no one has heard of but everyone ought to know about? Become an Indy music reviewer and let our readers know.

Box Steward

Love The Indy so much that you want to help take care of it? An ongoing need that we have is box-watching. Each month, our new issue is distributed to newspaper boxes all over the five boroughs. We ask that volunteers adopt a box that is on or nearby a travel route that they regularly use. By checking to make sure the box is clean and has papers in it every week, box watchers are a vital force in the paper’s circulation! For more, see here.
