Wall Street Occupiers Create Their Own Media

Manny Jalonschi Sep 20, 2011

In the four days since the Sept. 17 occupation of Wall Street began, thousands — if not tens of thousands — of New Yorkers have stopped by to encourage, join and sometimes debate the protest city that has developed at Zuccotti Park, on the corner of Broadway and Liberty St. Despite the attention the anti-corporate protest has garnered in the independent press and personal blogs, there has remained a dearth of mainstream media coverage of the #occupywallstreet movement.

As a result, the protest city developed a communications and outreach team, designed to reach out to the media and community organizations. Besides organizing to raise money, to the tune of over $8,000, for food and supplies, the numerous activists behind the Wall Street Occupation have also tried to encourage supporters and occupiers to spread their own media through texts, phone calls and social networking sites like Facebook and Twitter.

Below is a chronological selection of tweets detailing the progression of the occupation — including an update from Tuesday morning about the arrest of two members of the communications team for trying to protect their computer equipment from the rain with a tarp.
