On Tuesday, October 14 from 6-9 pm, we’ll gather in the home and backyard of longtime supporters in Park Slope, Brooklyn to celebrate a quarter-century of radical journalism.

The Indypendent began 25 years ago this fall as a four-page black-and-white newspaper. A $500 grant from the Puffin Foundation paid for our first print run. After that, we were on our own. Making it to one year was a small miracle. We learned as we went – training hundreds of citizen journalists, building a citywide distribution network, amplifying the voices of movements across NYC and around the world. Along the way, we built an absolutely unique New York City media institution.
Come join us as we celebrate a quarter-century of independent journalism and activism. This in-person fundraising party will be a night to remember. There will be plenty of opportunities to connect with fellow supporters of grassroots media over food and drink. Our special guests will include:
State Senator Jabari Brisport is a former public school teacher who was elected to the State Senate in 2020 as a democratic socialist and the first out LGBTQ+ person of color to serve in that body. He is now in his third term in office and is one of nine democratic socialists who currently serve in the New York State Legislature. You can visit our coverage of his 2020 campaign here and here. Other elected officials attending will include State Senator Kristen Gonzalez, Assemblymembers Emily Gallagher, Marcela Mitaynes and Phara Souffrant Forrest as well as City Councilmembers Alexa Aviles, Shahana Hanif and Sandy Nurse.
Longtime peace activist Leslie Cagan has been the lead organizer for several of the largest antiwar and climate marches in U.S. history including the 1982 Rally for Nuclear Disarmament that saw 1 million people gather in Central Park; the Feb. 15, 2003 protest against the Iraq War that saw a half-million people flood the streets of mid-Manhattan as a part of a worldwide day of protest and the September 21, 2014 People’s Climate March in New York that drew more than 300,000 people. Lindsey Boylan served as an aide to Gov. Andrew Cuomo from 2015-2018. In 2021, she became the first of 11 women to publicly accuse Cuomo of sexual harassment, setting in motion events that would lead to his fall from power later that year. When Cuomo tried to revive his political career by running for mayor this year, Boylan became one of his most outspoken critics. After Cuomo lost the primary, she published an article in The Indypendent titled, “We Will Beat These Monsters”.
James Davis is president of Professional Staff Congress-CUNY, the union local that represents 30,000 faculty and staff at the City University of New York. The PSC is, quite likely, the most progressive union local in the city. It is currently leading fights against everything from cuts in funding to scientific research to attacks on the freedom of speech of faculty and students alike.
