When it comes to The Indypendent, there’s still much for me to learn. I was recruited to write my first article just a little less than four months ago, when The Indy’s editor John Tarleton gave me a call and invited me to write for The Indypendent. It was incredibly gratifying for me on a personal level, as I was still very much new to the world of political writing. At that point I was a political activist and organizer with two published Substack articles and a prolific Twitter account with about 1,000 followers.

John simply plucked me from a place of obscurity and brought me into the fold. This year I got to write three articles for The Indypendent – the first handicapping the contenders to replace retiring Rep. Jerry Nadler in my home congressional district, another on the socialist left’s golden opportunity in 2026 to reach millions of disaffected liberals and move them in our direction and a third article on the growing threats being posed to civil liberties by Zionist censorship and repression that was one of the featured pieces in The Indy’s 25th anniversary edition. 

When I attended The Indypendent’s 25th anniversary party in October, I was struck by the cohesiveness of the community the paper had built. I met everyone from prominent local socialist politicians to fellow young writers and activists to glorious old stalwarts of New York’s leftist underground. Like with the Zohran Mamdani campaign, I felt a beautiful sense of culmination as I sat back and observed the movement we’ve built and the infrastructure we have now to popularize our ideas and analysis. 

There are many reasons why I would urge you to donate to keep The Indypendent strong and help it expand at this moment of a rising tide for socialism in America. Over the past decade, it’s coverage of NYC-DSA, of which I am a member, has been unparalleled. And it followed Zohran for years before he became a household name. But, it’s the necessity of building left-wing infrastructure that I’d point to above all else. 

We know all too well that mainstream institutions, from legacy media outlets to political machines to the think tank industrial complex will never offer the left a seat at the table, and therefore we must cultivate our own institutions from scratch. We don’t have lines of billionaire donors ponying up an endless flow of cash for us to condemn their corrosive effect on American society.
