Join us this Saturday 5-9 pm at Starr Bar for a “Salsa Saturday” celebration of The Indypendent’s 25 years of serving New York city and the 50th birthday of The Indy’s originating co-founder Ana Nogueira. Music will be provided courtesy of DJ Fatin. 

The Indy began as a gleam in Nogueira’s eye in the spring of 2000 and would launch in September of that year. For more, read her inspiring first-person account of The Indy’s origins. 

How The Paper Got Started

Ana would leave the Indy in 2002 to work as Democracy Now’s first video producer. Later, she would become the co-director of the highly acclaimed documentary Roadmap to Apartheid which deftly explores the similarities between South African and Israeli apartheid and which gained hundreds of thousands after October 7. In 2015, Nogueira became the co-founder of Starr Bar which has emerged as a key hub for the flourishing of political activism and artistic creativity in New York City. The Indy celebrated its 25th anniversary this fall, and Nogueira continues to support the paper she helped to found. Proceeds from Saturday’s party will go to The Indy. 

“I can’t think of a better way to celebrate my half-century birthday than honoring the countless journalists that have made The Indy thrive over the last quarter century,” Nogueira said. “The Indy is a priceless NYC treasure, and now more than ever it needs our support to keep breaking through corporate media lenses and social media algorithms.”

“Ana recruited me to join The Indy in its earliest days,” added Indy Editor-in-Chief John Tarleton. “Her belief in the importance of independent media was unshakeable. And we are so very grateful that the proceeds from the celebration of her 50th birthday party are being dedicated to The Indypendent as we go all out to cover this crucial time in the history of our city and our country.”
